My brother, Peter Du Boulay was Manager at Sena Sugar for many years until being kicked after independence. The Plantation was started by my Great Grandfather, J.P. Hornung during the 1880's. I'm fascinated by your photos, great recollections for posterity. Congratulations! Diane Villax

Hi Nigel Glad you like the photos. Sena was not an easy place to visit, and I am of course pleased that my collection is helping so much with the restoration of the locomotives. I agree that ordering prints of all of the photos will be a little expensive, and would like to assist, but arranging prints here would also be costly in paper / ink etc. However, if you take a set and would also like a few enlargements I will soon be taking some slides to Jessops for them to be scanned and printed as 8 x 10's. This should give better results that an enlargement thrpough Fotopic. I can add a few for you if you wish. You would have to cover all costs from Jessops, post, etc.

Dear Geoff My first time accessing this site which is incredible and I have rated the photos as good and very good. It must be an expensive hobby. Are most of these rail lines on the original "Cape to Cairo" line and is Khami bridge in Bechuanaland. I love the passenger carriage and remember the bunks. We had a six bunk carriage with snowy white sheets and clean blankets and incredible service when I was a youngster, now in old age these memories are strong with nostalgia. Thank you Warm Regards Yvonne

Thank you for the Zimbabwe/Rhodesia Railway photo's on your web site. As an ex railway fireman from the Mafeking line and a steam fireman from the Bulawayo depot until finishing as a driver in Mutare 1988, then leaving to live in the UK, your pictures have brought back many found times i had while on the railways, Jan 1968- April 1988.

try looking at www.royal-livingstone-express.com Tourist trains (steam hauled) are now running along a small part of the line. I lived in Zambia 1995 to a few months ago and regularly travelled Lusaka to Livingstone. Passenger trains ran irregularly to Mulobezi but spent more time derailed than actually on the tracks. A great set of photos

Of all the diesel locomotives that saw service in Rhodesia during the sixties, severnties and in Zimbabwe up to 2008 and beyond nothing compares to the General Electric (u-boat) designated DE6s.These lovely locos were well maintained and looked great in white, green and yellow. Also their engine sound was like a whisper of rushing water. My first ride being in 1969 at Umtali station.Of all diesel locos the DE6 STANDS APART and hats off to the original designer engineer. No one can beat it

DE2s, well these locos bring back all the memories I wonder why I visited this web site,Goeff this is the very best you have done.My tour of the Mechanical workshops Mutare in 1980 were rewarded by getting to see 3 DE2s being overhauled. The chief Engieer resopnsible for allocating these locos including the great DE6s must have been fond of Umtali.Although there was not a diesel depot most of these locos were stabled on platform 2 which runs parallel to them main platform

Geoff I know you have had enough of this but just look at this beauty DE6 no 1606 I wonder how the Americans feel about this locomotive. This was designed well ahead of its time.It is the benchmark of all diesel locos just as the concorde is the bench mark of luxury supersonic plane.Spoonet/transwerk did try some modifications to their units and they also look good but (I call them humpbacks) some are still runnung in Namibia.I wish todays GE Engnrs could revive this design for the cape cairo corridor

This staem loco was the pride of Umtali unfotunatley it was withdrawn.I remember as kids we used to admire this loco standing on the headshunt opposite the first bay of mechanical workshops (from harare side) and running parallel to the mainline. The headshunt formed the spur which entered the then Rhodesia Breweries. The buildings are still standing up to now.

What a lovely picture with Hob house in the background. Each time I go to Mutare this is my favourite spot to catch the trains.I used to walk from the mechaincal workshops past this point and just close to the feruka refinery to make sure I saw all the trains coming up and going down Just at the bend beyond the picture there is railroad level crossing and will be idle for a railway station to srvice the new township which has been constructed.

This photo (p50693369) is taken at Carisbrooke Siding. There used to be a wood and iron shed here. The film, 'Cry the Beloved Country', starring Sidney Poitier was partly filmed here. The photographer is standing on Inyeza hill.

The silo centre right is on Carisbrooke Farm. Above the silo, in the trees is a citrus packshed at Incalu siding. The hill, top right, is called Mkwekaze (mother-in-law). To the left of the train rises a hill called Nyeza. The hill in the far right top corner is in the Transkei.

you should see this place in September when all the blooming flowers go wild ,the cicadas start singing. You can catch 33 down at this place around 8 pm as it heads for the eastern higlands. When driving to Mutare one could actually run with the goods train from Headlands up this point.

The de9s only started service in the eastern highlands in 1976.prior to that it was the de7s which had taken over from the DE6s.Ww used to wonder why these were painted red.Later it was yellow with a red trim and were used as the principle loco s for passenger trains until the arrival of the DE10s.Now they save as shunt locos

You are correct that the DE9's went yellow fairly fast. You can see a yellow one in Gwelo (Gweru) steam shed photo. The Eatsen Area I refer to was (still is) based on Harare, covering from Gweru to Mutare with the Harare branches.

Well, it is in Zimbabwe after all. What did you expect? Chromed wheel nuts? Come on, at least it still survives, although given the turmoil in Zimbabwe you have to ask for how long.
